In the beginning of the Iron Man (2008), it
gave an introduction to Tony Stark’s status and personality. Tony Stark was
given a sense of wealthy that built on the back of war. He also had given an
impression of a bad person with arrogant, self-absorbed and rude stereotype. However, Stark changed himself entirely.
In the photo, this was a scene that Tony
Stark was a prisoner. In this scene, it was about a terroristic rebel group
kidnapped Stark and stark had to strap an old car battery to keep tiny shards
of his own company’s shrapnel from entering his heart. It was the main
scene that develops the main character ’iron man’. Stark built his first ‘iron
man’ suit with the doctor-‘Yinsen’. The ‘iron man’ suit saved Stark’s life but
also created a breakthrough within the storyline. This breakthrough changed Stark’s
character into a justice and caring figure. In the photo, the scene of Stark in
the ‘iron man’ suit presented an idea of humanity within the technology. Stark
was given responsibility as a hero and started to help people later on. It also
created contrast of technology uses between terroristic and himself. This scene
is the most entertaining part in the movie as creating a hero but also
exploring a new storyline for Tony Stark.
commentary 2:
In the film Titanic (1997), the characters can be categorized into two groups, which are first class passengers and the third class passengers. In the photo, the status of characters can be shown clearly in terms of dressing. For example, first class passengers such as Rose had well made up clothing. Her clothing was a royal outfit with luxury jewelry that gives a sense of wealthy. In contrast, third class passengers such as Jack are often seen the same set of clothes and not have many outfits to change. The difference of clothing had presented their differences in terms of status in the story.
Lighting and camera shots range both also stand a significant role as creating romantic moods in this film. In the photo, it was the scene that Jack and Rose were standing at the railing of the ship, a soft and yellow golden lighting was created. The lighting was created in purpose as a natural light come from sunset in the evening as a romantic mood that related to the storyline. In the photo, a mid-shot was applied. From this mid-shot, the facial expression of the main characters can be easily showed without missing the background of romantic atmosphere. This can enlarge the romantic mood and their love along the storyline.
commentary 3:
The lighting in this film mainly consist
with yellow, blue and white light. When the scene presented a good relationship
or environment between the characters, it used a high key lighting to brighten
the atmosphere and create a romantic mood. The yellow and white colours of
lighting showed a sense of relax but also warm atmosphere. The blue and white
colours of lighting presented a sense of cold and purity. When the scene
described the main characters confused about their relationship, blue and white
colours of light created a mood of cold but also presented a sense of confuse
of the relationship. There are also several lighting applied to describe
characters’ feelings. For example, when the girl sat in dim lighting, it was
signifying she is confused something. In the scene that the main characters
were sitting together on a train, the shadows of them apart from the bright
light expressed their confused feelings. Different uses of lighting created a contrast of feelings and situation between the main characters.

Jacob, You have identified some basic elements in your analysis, but each of the discussions needed to go further.
ReplyDeleteIron Man: You don’t really explain how or why Stark’s character changes. What is the main motivation for this change. It is not just that he nearly died and has to use technology to survive.
Titanic: You identify some elements of how the film creates the narrative, but you needed to go a lot further. Why is this scene important in the narrative? Why is it significant that a 3rd class passenger is romantically involved with a 1st class passenger? What is the significance of ‘flying’?
500 days of Summer: You make some good observations about lighting, but there is more to this scene than just lighting. You needed to talk about the other elements that contribute to the narrative.
